Stratocaster HSS – Can you use a neck position guitar pickup for middle position?

Hey, I was wondering if I could use my neck pickups as middle pickups. I have an Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro and a Little 59er. Both were designated “neck” pickups by the person I bought them from and I was wondering if I could use one of them as the middle pickup.

Thanks!

You should have no problem. The difference between neck and bridge pickups are the number of turns, and thus the output.

Given the same style of pickup, the neck version will have fewer windings than the bridge version. The reason for this is that at the neck, the strings are vibrating in a wider arc, and thus will induce more voltage in a pickup. The neck pickup is wound a little weaker to balance it with the bridge.

You don’t normally see a “middle” pickup. The exception would be a single coil that’s reverse wound so that you get a hum cancelling effect in positions 2 and 4 on the pickup selector.
